Indeed. It could also have been based on (or inspired by) the Italian word leonessa meaning "lioness":https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/leonessa#Italian (in English)

Hi Lucille!!!I agree.
In Italian lioness is leonessa, in Spanish is leona, in Portuguese leoa and in French lionne.The Italian form is similar to Leonisa.
