already explained by Ivayla lower down in the thread. Modern Bulgarian is a Slavic language, but Boriana is derived from Boris, which is either Turkic or Mongol in origin, dating to when the court language of Greater Bulgaria was one of the Turkic languages spoken north of the Caucasus at the time.
