There are two versions of CANTU, one Mexican and one Italian in the "Behind the Name" records. The Mexican version came from Italy, due to all of the men from Italy moving into South America and Mexico from "Invasions" and explorations. Also, check that Cantu can be a derivative from China with the link to the word "song." My husband's father and many from the Cantu area in Italy emigrated from Italy to South America. Cantu is also found in many Native American surnames due to migration. Hoping this helps in further research.
