IS THERE ANYONE OUT THERE THAT CAN HELP ME WITH THIS NAME AS I HAVE EXHAUSTED MY MEANS .THE FIRST PERSON IN MY FAMILY TO CARRY THIS NAME WAS THOMAS MELMUTH CASEY( BORN ABOUT 1830 ), THE SECOND WAS JOHN MELMUTH CASEY( BORN ABOUT 1860), THE THIRD WAS JOHN MELMUTH CASEY JR.( BORN ABOUT 1890).FROM THE HISTORY OF MY FAMILY I KNOW THAT JOHN M. CASEY WAS NAMED AFTER HIS GRANDFATHER, JOHN CASEY JR.( NO MIDDLE NAME EXISTS?).HE WAS BORN ABOUT 1780 IN MARYLAND OF IRISH PARENTS. JOHN JR.MARRIED A WOMAN OF DUTCH DESCENT SO I DO NOT KNOW OF WHERE THIS NAME COMES FROM OR WHAT IT MEANS.IF ANYONE OUT THERE CAN HELP I WOULD BE VERY THANKFUL. For what it's worth, here's what I found on the knz.org website:
"When the British government annexed Zululand in 1887 and established several magisterial districts, it was decided to administer that of Mthonjaneni from a town named after the resident commissioner - Sir Melmoth Osborn."
Clearly, good old Sir Melmoth must have got his name from somewhere ... sounds vaguely Scottish ... but it might give you a lead.
As with Andy's sensible suggestion, the spelling isn't an exact match for what you're looking for. But Melmoth is pronounced the same way as Melmuth would be, so it would be an easy transcription error, just as the capital letters H and M can look very similar in some handwritings and end up being confused as a result.

yes , you guys are correct and thanks for the intrest u have shown. my church records show that when addresed his fellow members and family called him (Mel).this will be a tough one to figure out
Melmuth and Melmoth sound similar to the surname Melmouth prehapes they are all different spellings of the same name , I cant find any information on the meaning though
