I met an Italian male whose name is Sabio. Unless I knew that he was Italian I would assume it to be a male form of Sabia. However, considering that he's Italian is it fine for me to assume it to be an attempt at a male form of Sabina?

Sabio is not listed in my Italian name dictionary, but it is listed in my Spanish name dictionary (Diccionario de Nombres de Persones by Jose Albaiges Olivart), where it is said to come from Latin sapiens, "wise", and to originally have been an epithet of St. Dominic.
