Ellike
Ellike is female. I assume it is Hungarian or from a nearby place. I got it from I Have Lived A Thousand Years; a book by Livia Bitton-Jackson, a holocaust survivor. This was her birth name. Does anyone know how it is pronounced, the meaing, or what it means?

I'm Jewish and my ancestors came from Central Europe (although not Hungary) so I'll give it a try.
I would prn. Ellike el-ikuh or el-ikeh. "eh" would be like in stEAk. Not like "bEEr" or "fAde". Not "ee" sound at all.

I've read that book too, and the sequel...it says once in the first book that her real name is Elvira.
:-D Oh well, I was close!
the 'ke' or 'ike' ending is a popular diminutive in many European countries, and I found Evike, Hungarian pet name for Eve or Eva, in the database. I had a quick look but couldn't find an obvious 'ell' name for Ellike to be a nickname of, but BtN's Hungarian names list is by no means exhaustive. So I'd say it's probably a nickname for some Hungarian 'ell' name - possibly roughly equivalent to Ellie in English.

:-)
Elek is actually the Hungarian form of Alexius, roughly equivalent to Alexis or even Alex in English. I couldn't see a feminine alternative, although no doubt there is one. However, the 'ike' ending is clearly a diminutive.
You could be right in that it might be closer, as an equivalent, to "Allie" rather than "Ellie".
