It derives from the Ancient Greek noun "eirène" (epsilon-iota-rho-accempted eta-ny-eta), meaning "peace". It was popular among the first Christians and in the Byzantine Empire while now it has become a rare name. It is currently used in Italy, Spain and in the USA. Irene means "peace" in Greek, and it was the name of the Ancient Greek goddess of peace. Historically, it was very common in the Byzantine Empire.I don’t get why you couldn’t just look up the name in the database, but there you go.
