What is up with the name Christop?
So, there's this name that I guess is a form of Christopher or Christoph, but it's spelled Christop, and I noticed that it had this giant jump in 1989 on the popularity list, before disappearing again and never coming back. Why is that? What is this name? Was it from a movie or something?

I don't know, but I find it very unattractive. What an Ugly Name!

What elbowin said, it was an error with New York's name counting that year.If you look at the chart for 1989, you'll also see Alexande [Alexander]
Alexandr [Alexandra]
Stephani [Stephanie]
Christin [Christine/Christina-- this spelling was used as a name too but had a sharp increase in 1989 and dropped the next year because of the error]
Elizabet [Elizabeth]
Katherin [Katherine]Or you can just look at this

It is not a name. It is Christoph(er) truncated to 8 characters due to a bug in data processing and this bug specifically occurred in New York.It was discovered and published by Nancy Man and published in her blog here:http://www.nancy.cc/2007/11/08/the-great-baby-name-glitch-of-1989-christop-alexandr-elizabet/

Wow! Interesting. I thought it seemed weird. I sure hope all these people changed their names eventually. Did they have to use these non-names on paperwork and such for a while? Were these their legal names? Or it's just what ended up being sent to the social security registry?

Their birth certificates and Social Security cards still said Christopher (or any of the other names I mentioned in my comment). It's just an error in the data.
