Allison, especially in that spelling, is an English surname, and because of that it did turn up sometimes as a male name in the United States during the 19th and 20th centuries. He also has a brother named Muriel :)I don't know why or how his parents named him or his brother, since Alison and Muriel are traditionally female names in English-speaking countries, but just because the name was given to a boy doesn't automatically make it unisex. After all, there are girls named James and Michael, and other traditionally masculine names, but those haven't necessarily become unisex.
