I was wondering if it could be considered a Celtic/Scandinavian name as well.
Also, could it possibly have a meaning linked with Aesc for the Ash Tree?

Asher is also an English surname, which according to "A Dictionary of Surnames" by Reaney and Wilson can be derived from "dweller by the ash tree." I am sure that on occasion the motivation for giving the name to a son has been a relationship with an Asher family, so the given name could be considered to have that as a secondary derivation.
