According to the Norsk Personnamnleksikon it's either a Norwegian variant of Atle (Gothic Attila, a diminutive of Atta, father) or a Norwegian abbreviation of Asliev (East Norse ÁslæifR, Ás "deity" + læifR "dear, beloved").
