Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knows the meaning of the name Jarkko. It's a male, Finnish name. I can't seem to find anything on it!
Thanks,

just a question: where do the k's come from if it is related to Jeremiah? I can see the link to Jarmo and Jarno, but I find it hard to see the link to Jarkko.
Interesting to know. :-) It is my best friend's boyfriend's name.

Two K's mean a long K-sound
One K means a short K-sound.
Spelling it KK instead of CK is rather logical imo. The letter C is not used in Finnish, neither is X (KS does the job just fine).

How do you get a long K-sound?
Just try and say it
Try saying an ordinary English word like "look", "back" or "tricky". First with as short K-sound as possible and then with a longer K-sound. With a longer K-sound you just linger longer on the K.

interesting, I never noticed that before!
I did! I always thought, K was an explosive sound. But I realise that making explosions last longer may cause some difficulties …
Finnish have many such combinations
If you say "riita" (REE-tah), it means "fight" or "argument", but if you say Riitta (REETT-ah), it's a name (a variant of Britta).
Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times if only one remembers to turn on the lights

We have to invade Aghan...Afagahn...Afganh...Afghna...Affg...Iraq ~ Dubya

....and twice in a row as well! :)
The Dutch male name Jarco and female name Jarka are pet forms of Jarich, this last name is a short form of names that start with the element Ger which means "spear". (quoting my name book here)
Jarkko might be related to this.
