How do we know if a name is real?

How do we know if a name is real? Someone could just get on here and submit a name that is not real. You really don't know. Of course I guess it wouldn't matter but how do we know? Maybe we just say a name is unfamilliar to us and say it's not real but it actually could be real. I know it wouldn't matter if it wasn't real but I'm kind of curious sometimes. I really want to know.

As for names that are from literature or popular culture, I think the name has to be from an existing, official work of literature/pop culture - names made up for fanfics obviously do not count. A good rule of thumb would be to do a Google search for the name and the name of the work of fiction it appears in.

Submitted names are looked over by editors and if its determined not to have any usage, it's deleted.
