Message: "Felty surname" - Behind the Name

Hi,
I'm trying to find the country of origin for my surname. Following the German Immigration my ancestors used Felty prior to that was Velte and the original immigrant spelled the name Vallentin. They traveled from Rotterdam to England then to the USA. However, I can not leave a stone unturned since I've learned the name has Swedish origins. I've also found a large number of today's population around Luxembourg region spelling the name Velte. The immigrants were classified as Palatinates from Germany having origins from the Palatine region of Germany however, how could that be if the name is swedish? I can't say the country of origin was Swedish, German, Luxembourg, Prussia,or Bavaria without finding out where this name and the people actually descend from. Are there any linguists out there that would know and could show evidence????

My grandmother was a Felty Moravian from Lebanon, PA. My mother's DNA has 39% Scandinavian and very little German.

That doesn't really have any bearing on where the surname comes from. Characteristically Scandinavian DNA has been common in many regions of Germany, and indeed much of Western Europe, since the Roman empire.

Im a Felty we are Germans my great grandfather spoke German fluent and told us the Felty s came from Germany to the United States in the 1700s and settled in Pennsylvania. Ive also took DNA tests confirming my German ancestry

My grandmother's maiden name was Felty. Her father's side were Moravians in Lebanon, Pa. There are a lot of Feltys in and around Lebanon County, Pennsylvania.

Felty is definitely German ive done a ton of research on the name and DNA tests on 23andme and ancestry.com confirm im 30 percent German ancestry.Lastly my great grandfather spoke fluent German and said that the Felty family came from Germany to Pennsylvania in the 1700s and that alot of his family were devout Lutheran followers. To my knowledge the Felty surname is an americanized german surname that was originally Velte or Velten it has no Scandinavian or Swedish roots.

Hello, I had to respond to this post when I found it because my maiden name is also Felty, and my married name is Wilson! I had always been told by my parents that Felty's were German. This made sense because my father always said his father grew up in the Amish Country of Pennslyvania and was some form of Amish or Mennonite before he left that area as a young adult. I was surprised when I had a DNA test done from Ancestory.com that results were 0 percent German, but 35 percent Scandinavian. I was not aware of any Scandinavian relatives however upon further research I learned that many Americans have some percentage of Scandinavian DNA due to the Viking Period. The Vikings settled in many different areas of Europe. I realize this doesn't rWally answer your question but I found it very interesting, good luck on your search!

My grandmother's maiden name was Felty. My mother's DNA results came back with 39% Scandinavian and very little German. I think the origin in Sweden is looking good. She always thought she was Pennsylvania Dutch. She also came back with 25% Irish, which I was also able to track down to a long standing family in Cornwall, Pa called the Shays.

Felty is definitely not Scandinavian its definitley of German orgin ive done a ton of research on the surname & also my grandfather spoke fluent German and told us the Feltys were German Lutherans who came to the United States in the 1700s and settled in Lancaster Pennsylvania area. Ive took a DNA test on 23andme and ancestry.com and im 49 percent British, 30 percent German, 12 percent Irish, 5 percent Iberian and only 3 percent Scandinavian and 1 percent African

We don't respond to email addresses. Your surname Felty, however, is an americanized spelling of the South German Velte, from a short form of the personal name Valentin (see Valentine).

You are corect my ancestry and surname is of German origin. Nicholas Velte came from Germany to the United States in the 1700s and the name was americanized to "Felty"
