Is Shiki a real Japanese name?
As in, actually used on people? Does anyone know any prominent Japanese people named Shiki, past or present?
Replies
Shiki is currently 261st place in Japan among males, written as hiragana (しき).
This name is real and has been around for a long time, it is also popular among females though it is much more masculine than feminine.

Googling common Japanese surnames + Shiki brings up lots of people on facebook of both sexes. It seems to be more common on men.
I have access to a fairly comprehensive list of Japanese female names, but don't have a corresponding list for males. There are many unisex names used in Japan, so I'm not surprised that Shiki is also found for men.
It's a surname, too.

Yes, Shiki is a real girl's name, as are Shikie, Shikiko, Shikika, Shikino, Shikibu, Shikiho, Shikimi, and probably others.
The only famous person I know of with any of these names is the 10th-c. author of the Tale of Genji, Murasaki Shikibu--and this was her pen name, not her real given name.
Nevertheless, Shiki et al. are genuine Japanese names.
