It may be compared to the name Emerentia (from Emerentius, the names of some more obscure saints). The -iana ending is a common elaboration and Emerentiana is also the name of a Saint. The only thing left to explain is the letter "s" (the second letter of the name). It may be either silent (depending on the language) and have no meaning at all, or it may be a #contamination# from names like Esmeralda.
