Yeah, Mikey's entry sez that Julian (the Apostate) was the "last pagan emperor" of Rome. Technically, yes, but the neat thing about Julian was that Rome was ALREADY Christian (for 30-40 years) when Julian came into power and tried to RE-INTRODUCE paganism as the dominant religion! Talk about an uphill battle...
Julian only lasted 2 years in the 360s, but the story is fascinating. I first read Gore Vidal's novelistic autobiography of the emperor (entitled "Julian ") 30-odd years ago, but it's well-written and still available. Check it out.
