meaning and heritage of Meghan
My name is Meghan and while visiting relatives in County Cork, Ireland two years ago, we inguired about my name. All relatives told us that Meghan means strong and powerful and spelled this way is Gaelic.
Again when visiting the Worlds Fair in Knoxville, TN the head of Elm Tree Theater who happened to be Welsh, asked my name and when he asked the spelling, he said that particular spelling was Gaelic. Hope this helps. All of our ancestors came directly from County Cork and Kerry, Ireland, so I believe their information. It is a beautiful name and I am proud of it and proud to be Irish.

All reliable commentators state that Megan is a Welsh form of Margaret. However, the person who stated that Meghan is not a Welsh spelling was correct.
Quoting Cleveland Evans, "The many respellings of this name are American attempts to make the name look Irish, but it is not an Irish name...The idea that it's Irish may have come from confusing it with the Irish surname "Meighan," with which it has no connection."
The meaning of Meighan, by the way, is "honorable."
