During the Olympics, the name of a golfer from Thailand caught my eye. Ariya Jutanugarn. The commentators were pronouncing her name different ways. Some were pronouncing it like "area", and some were pronouncing it like Maria without the "M".
Is this a Thai name? How is it pronounced? What does it mean?
I think it would be a nice spelling variation for Aria, which is becoming popular in the U.S.

It's likely the Thai form of the Indian name Arya, which as you can see on the site means "noble". It was used as a demonym by a group that settled in what is now the north half of India and Pakistan.
