Tempie
This is a name I noticed on the girls' top 1000 for the 1880s. It seems to have been used semi-frequently until the early 20th century (it last charted in 1913 and hasn't appeared since).
My guess is that it is a diminutive of Temperance, which was sometimes used as a name back then. Can someone confirm as to whether or not Tempie is a diminutive of Temperance?

I've read a couple of quite good detective novels featuring a woman called Tempe (same pronunciation as Tempie) which is short for Temperance. I think she's a forensic scientist of some kind, and I vaguely connect the stories with Canada. So someone thinks it still works!

You mean Temperence "Bones" Brennan, the forensic anthropologist from the series upon which the eponymous "Bones" TV show is based.
