There is this soccer player named Eidur Gudjohnson. I was just wondering if anyone knew the origin of the name Eidur or what it's english name might be. See he's from Iceland but i can't find anything here about it. So if someone could help. Please?

Hi Andi,

The meaning of Eiður is uncertain. It might derive from the Old Norse word eiðr meaning 'oath' or it could be an Icelandic form of the Gaelic name Aodh meaning 'fire'.

According to an Icelandic horse-monger, Eidur means "oath, a solemn promise" (http://www.icelandichorse.is/Sold2003.htm)

But I would not eidur the trustworthiness of the above.
