The meaning of the name "Shinya"
Hi, I have a dog (collie) that i rescued about 4 years ago, who had no history with the home, so had no name. Just a code = mp47.
It was my job to give him a name and being a fan of motorcycle racing and of Japaneese names decided on the name - SHINYA, after the great racer - Shinya Nakano.
The problem I have is that when poeple ask his name, they always follow with "what does it mean"?.
I have seach high and low to find the meaning of the name SHINYA, but to joy.
Can anyone help????
All the very best

Almost all Japanese names have more than one possible meaning depending on the kanji characters they are written in.
According to the following website, Nakano's parents chose his given name because they wanted him to "grow up straight like an arrow". It seems probable that "arrow" is part of the meaning of Shinya in his case. But you will have to consult someone who can read the characters to know exactly how Shinya should be interpreted.

Okay, I do not know any Japanese, but long time back I wrote a perl script to read Unicode databases. And here is some output from that.
Shinya in Shinya Nakano is U+771f U+77e2 in unicode characters. The Unihan database (from Unicode Consortium) then tells us that the first
means real, actual, true, genuine, and the second means arrow, dart; vow, swear.
However, to emphasize the point made in the above post, http://www.animelab.com/anime.manga/dictionary/shi/4520/40 (which is where I figured the Unicode encoding: Shinya Nakano's page just gives pictures, not characters) gives a large number of meanings for the word (I guess in the Anime context, but who cares?). The Kanjis that appear in that page, I list below:
(The order of the pron for each kanji is
Tang|Cant|HanPin|Mand|Kor|Viet|On|Kun
For Japanese the On and Kun columns are relevant.)
