It's neither English nor Arabic. There are two possible origins.1. An extension of Kay, the short from of Katherine, from Greek Ekaterina, of unknown origin (possibly not Greek, but an earlier pre-Hellenic, or neighbouring language). Concerns that it had something to do with Hekate, a goddess of black magic, caused some to alter the spelling to Katharine, with reference to Greek Katharos clean, pure. However that form is late and rare. Even the standard English form, Katherine, shows no relation to Katharos.
2. Short for Michaela, a feminine variation of Michael, Hebrew (not Arabic) for "Who is like God".Sorry to burst your bubble, but most name sites just make those meanings up out of thin air.
