Everest is an English surname which was originally a Norman French place name indicating one's ancestors came from a place called Evreux in northern France. According to Reaney & Wilson's A Dictionary of English Surnames, Evreux goes back the name of an ancient Celtic tribe whose own name simply meant "dwellers on the Eure River."
