In 2003 this same subject arose. Eban is most likely to be a shortened form of Ebenezer, a Hebrew name. In my research I have found that Eban's have resided in Lithuania, Scotland, England, America and Israel of course. It is possible that the earliest use of the shortened name was from Lithuania.
I am a descendant of Emmanuel Ben Ahar Ashley Eban (whom emigrated to New Zealand in 1845)and I desperately need to contact anyone of the same ancestry. I notice that Stuart Eban has posted before and I would be very interested in making contact.

In my research, Eban could be another spelling for Ebany which is an American name meaning "hard, dark wood". It's spiritual connotation is "shining". There is a scripture that matches it from John chapter 8 verse 12 "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life." Hope that helps.

The wood is Ebony, not Ebany. Ebon is a poetic alternative to Ebony, referring either to the wood or to the colour.

Can you please explain what you mean by "spiritual connotation" and "matching scriptures"?

Are you sure you want to encourage this drivel, by which black wood becomes a bright light without the benefit of matches?

Must say, my favourite scriptural wood will always be shittim - regardless of meaning!

Just to clear it up, Eban is definitely a Jewish name, and it is translated as "stone". Even if it is derived from the name Ebenezer (stone/rock of help) which is biblical by the way, Eban still has the same meaning.

Read Dorothy Astoria: The Name Book (ISBN 1-55661-982-0) and you'll know all about "spiritual connotations". I was once given this book, but it has nothing to do with serious derivations of names. What Persteph wrote, is a quote from that book.
