Mittie
Does anyone know why Mittie was used fairly frequently in the 1880s? Is Mittie a diminutive?

A quick google search shows:
1. It's surname
2. It's a town in Louisiana
3. A Woman using it as a nickname for Martha.
Just guessing here but I could have also be a feminine diminutive of Mitchell or a feminine version of Mitt. It also be an alternate spelling of mitty which is also a surname.

If I were to guess, it may have been a diminutive for Matilda, which was also rather popular in that period.
