It was a surname long before it came into popularity. So it started to be used as a first name mainly because it was a surname that was either a family name or sounded nice to people or a whole host of other reasons, not related to its meaning but to its history.
And I'm not at all an expert, but surnames can be based on things like a physically bent nose, because they aren't generally given to babies :)
