This is more of a question about BtN itself rather than names, but what is the distinction between the 'short form' of a name and the 'diminutive'? I see this a lot on Russian names on this website especially e.g. Katerina is the short form, whereas Katya is the nickname (of Ekaterina, evidently), but what makes one the short form as opposed to the diminutive?

I think the real difference is that a diminutive is meant as an affectionate form, while a short form is merely phonetically shorter.
