HELP!! I am trying to find the meaning of a most unusual name and am having no luck! Salvora is the name. The L is silent and the O is pronounced as a long A. Please help I am wanting to name my daughter after a family name and this is the prettiest but I don't want to stick her with a name that has no meaning!

Did your family possibly come from the Isla de Salvora, off the coast of northern Spain? Sorry I couldn't find a meaning for that name. Perhaps the word is from the local dialect -- a language called "Gallego" in that region of Spain, with similarities to Portuguese.
The closest-sounding word to "salvora" in Portuguese appears to be "savior" (meaning "savior"). In Spanish the same word is "salvador".
Try contacting the Galician Department of Tourism at this e-mail address:

and ask them about the Isla de Salvora. If anyone should know the meaning of that word, I'm sure they would.
Good luck, Amelia! :)
