Ney, portuguese name
anyone knows what is its etymology? I think its a shorter form of another name but I cannot find what name.

My best guess would be that it's the French surname, and a tribute to the marshal whom Napoleon called 'the bravest of the brave'. In which case it was derived from either the French or the German words for 'new' - a name given to a recent arrival in a village.
Why it would be used in Portugal is another question! But he was worth commemorating.

I've seen it in a Brazilian character and in a Brazilian historical figure.
