I've been wondering about Katniss, looking for it's meaning etc. I found the word in a book of wild foods, "Feasting on Wild Edibles". Some NA tribes used "katniss" for an aquatic bulb.

The character of the Hunger Games says that she is named after that plant. At one point she remembers that her father once told her, "Find yourself [the plant katniss] and you'll never go hungry" (paraphrasing from memory).
Also interesting, but not explicitly discussed in the book, is that the plant is shaped like an arrow, and that is her weapon of choice.
