Although it is also a name given to dolphins, I think it actually stems from Jonas the biblical name. In Turkish there also exists, Bünyamin (Benjamin) ªamus (Shamus - James as in Celtic) Mikail or, Mikayil (Michael) Kinyas ("Kneas" meaning "Prince" in Russian) Aruz (as in Elder Futhark) and Ilyas, (as in Ilias, in Greek), Yakup (as in Jacob) and many similar such names.
