Legally changing name?
I wonder if anyone knows the answer to this. I'm married and am using my husband's last name. I canged my name legally when we were married a fe years ago -- my legal name is my maiden name followed by my married name, though I don't use my maiden name (on credit cards, driver's license, checks, etc). I'd like to revert back to my maiden name (my husband has no problem with this). Is this any different from any other legal name change? In the state I live (NY) I believe changing one's name requires a hearing in front of a judge, a legal notice in a newspaper, two weeks to pass, then the name is changed. Marriage (changing name to husband's) requires only proof of marriage.
Thanks for any advice. Perhaps there's a different site w/the info if it isn't here or this is the wrong place to ask?

It is legal to use any name you want as long as there is no "intention to defraud". You can have checks and credit cards issued in your new name and use it in any situation you wish. Since you are reverting to the name you had at birth, simply showing people a copy of your birth certificate should be enough to clear up any objections ignorant clerks might bring up.
Thank you.
