The meaning of Almina.
Hello everyone,
I am looking for more conclusive information about the meaning of the feminine name Almina (*not* to be confused with the Arabic/Turkish name Almina; this post is about the "Western" name Almina).
I know that Almina is a very rare name that has been used in Victorian England as well as 19th-century USA. In fact, the Popular Names section of this website lists Almina as being the #817 girl's name in 1883 in the USA. Also, a notable bearer of this name was the English aristocrat Almina, Countess of Carnarvon (1876-1969).
In my search for the meaning of the name, I have come across the following possibilities:
- it is a diminutive form of Alma;
- it is a variant form of Elmina (with Elmina being a short form of Wilhelmina);
- it is a feminine form of the masculine name Elmer.
I also saw a few sources where it was mentioned that the name is actually of Welsh origin, but those sources failed to mention what the meaning of the name would be in Welsh.
That is all that I know, I'm afraid. I would love to hear more information about the name - for example, which of the aforementioned possibilities is the correct origin and meaning? Or are all of them correct (they all certainly sound feasible, after all)? And how much truth is there to the claim that the name is actually Welsh in origin?
Thank you in advance to those that can shed further light on this matter. :)
Sincerely,
Lucille
