It's a tropical fish properly called a betta, or Siamese Fighting Fish. You've seen 'em -- they come in maroon, dark blue, purple, etc., and have long flowing fins. Put two of the same gender together in a bowl or tank and they'll about tear each other apart. We could call 'em Cassius and Sonny, or George and Foreman...

I am not sure what the question was that pripos asked about the Beta Fish. Was it what is a beta fish? If it was a beta fish is a really pretty fish that is a agressive. They normally cant live together even if they are male and female. Cause unless it is mating time the male will kill the female! My mother loves beta's. She has 2 of them one in her den and one in the kitchen. My husband gave me one for valintines. A nice red one, but it died and I tried feeding it to my cat but he didnt want it. I am not normally that cruel but I just wanted to see if cats actually ate fish. But Sarahjeanne good luck with your beta's I could never keep one alive! LOL

Cats do eat fish, sometimes instead of Koshke Krunchies or Koshke Kanned Kat food (try pouring a tiny bit of tuna water in a shallow dish or an old plastic can lid. Watch carefully).
Shadow Kibblesbane (my feline companion) would rather have canned fish meant for humans than a lot of cat food. He also attacks non-canned fish (whether fresh or frozen). I wonder if that's why he's now on three units of insulin twice a day (snatching human food).

You've got to watch that people-food canned stuff for sodium content, as the sodium can really build up in a little critter like a cat (or a minpin). But you probably already do check the content labels first.
You know what the little critters really love? Baby food. It's already low in sodium, and my dogs just scarf it up when I give it to them as a treat. I dunno if I've ever seen baby food jars for fish meals, but all the little critters really go for the chicken.

Shadow will eat almost anything (including gefilte fish without horseradish). In fact, I have yet to find something he WON'T eat (he even will eat something containing habaneros, that meshugane).
On the other hand, the feral colony I'm helping loves almost any brand of cat food with broiled fish (without bones, of course). Oh, yeah, they love broiled liver, too.

Ha ha ha!! A Beta fish is a japaneese fighting fish. You can only have 1 in a bowl because they will kill each other. They are pretty small, abou the size of your every day gold fish, but very beautiful. They come in many different colors, ranging from blue to red to white. It's really fun, and maybe a bit cruel, to put a mirror up to one. They get all fiesty and puffy. It's cute!

What a nice surprise, P.L. :) You are correct. I believe that only male beta's fight. I think they are the only pretty one's too. Kinda like ducks. :P
