Mermod
Does anyone know where the name Mermod comes from or what it may be a form of? My great-great grandmother had a nephew named Mermod. His father was half-German and both parents were born in the US.

This is probably a case where a rare surname was turned into a given name.
Mermod is a French surname which is from the region of Franche-Comte, according to Noms et prenoms de France by Albert Dauzat. It is derived from an Old French word which meant "extremely small". The word was itself derived from the Latin word minimus.
This is a very rare surname in the USA, though. In the census records found in Ancestry library, it only shows up first in 1870. All the Mermods in the 1870 and 1880 censuses lived in Missouri, either St. Louis or Kansas City. Does that seem to fit the location of your family?

That side of my family lived in Southern Illinois. Mermod's mother was born in Illinois. His maternal grandfather was born in Maryland and his maternal grandmother was born in Iowa, so I am not sure where they got the name. Thank you for the information though!
