Hi! I am living in Groblersdal in South Africa. My maiden name were Janse van Rensburg. I married my husband in 1985, and become Chalmers. I Think the Chalmers surname came from Scottland. I would very much like to know more about my maiden surname, but more spesific, my married surname, because, i have 3 boys, who wil bear this surname into future. I would also like to see the family weapon, and the meaning of it. I am very interested in finding out this very difficult to come by information. Can you please help me? Chalmers is a Scottish variant of the English surname Chambers.
English: occupational name for someone who was employed in the private living quarters of his master, rather than in the public halls of the manor. The name represents a genitive or plural form of Middle English cha(u)mbre ‘chamber’, ‘room’ (Latin camera), and is synonymous in origin with Chamberlain, but as that office rose in the social scale, this term remained reserved for more humble servants of the bedchamber.
