Verdun
This is my grandfather's name (though he goes by his middle name, James). Does anyone know anything about the usage or meaning behind this name? All I know is that it is the name of a town in France.
Thank you in advance :)

According to wikipedia, 'Verdun' derives form the Latin 'Verodunum', meaning "strong fort".
The town is well-known in Europe because of its WW I history. The Battle of Verdun was one of the costliest battles of the war for both the French and the Germans. Where I live the word Verdun is associated with that brutal battle and the suffering of so many people. It is often considered a symbol for the brutality of war. I have never heard of its use as a name before.

That's very interesting; I never knew it had that kind of negative connotation. He was born a few years before WWII and I think of either Scottish, Irish, or English decent, not French or German.
Thank you for the information.
