The Ptolemies were Macedonian Greek rulers of ancient Egypt from the death of Alexander the Great to Cleopatra.
Ptolemy was an astronomer who lived at Alexandria (Egypt, not Virginia)in the second century. He theorized that the the sun, moon, and planets moved around the earth, which was supposed to be stationary. This was the conventional wisdom till the time of Copernicus.
