Re: El cid
in reply to a message by CHIMENE
Chimène is the French form of Ximena / Jimena, a common Iberian name in the Middle Ages. The most famous bearer was the wife of Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar aka "El Cid", a XI-century Spanish warrior (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Cid).
The origins of this name are disputed. Some argue that it's a feminine form of Simeon / Simon (equivalent to Simone). Others that Ximeno / Ximena has a different etymology and it's originally from a Basque or Navarrese source.
