?I don't get what that pronunciation guide is saying. It looks like it's saying to pronounce it gih-an (hard g)... which is definitely incorrect.The only question is whether it's one or two syllables. I know I've heard it with one before, but am not saying that it can't be with two.

That guide is wrong. In Italian, the group GI + A,O,U represents always the sound [ʤ] (like the English J). Gian has only a syllable ['ʤan] (JAN).
