According to this site the Persian female name Mahin is pronounced as mah-HEEN: http://www.gor.net/things/namesfor.html#M
I found a Facebook-account which explains the confusion: "My name is MAHIN/MAAHIN... and its not pronounced same as MAHEEN!"

'Maahin' (ماحن) is name of Arabic origin. It is one of many names of the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w/pbuh) meaning 'eliminator (of evils)'. Maahin is a unisex name; though an uncommon feminine version does exist: 'Maahina' (ماحنا).
MAHEENS cannot join this group. Only us Maahins!! WOO!!
Extra piece of info: Maahin is also a male Hindu name meaning 'great'.

I swear this is most irritated thing when people call me maheen man my name is not maheen it's "MAAHIN" "M.A.A.H.I.N" why can't you understand idk how to get rid of it... This is problem I am face since childhood

Hey this information is wrong, it says Maahin was one of the many names of the prophet Muhammad, but it’s actually “Al- Mahi” which was one of the names of the prophet
In sahih bukhari volume 4, book 56, number 732 narrated by Jubair bin Mutim it states “ I am Al-Mahi through whom allah will eliminate infidelity” NOT maahin
Although, the name Mahin has been mentioned in the Quran in
43:52 surah az zukhruf ayah 52
77:20 surah al mursalat ayah 20
68:10 surah al qalam ayah 10
But a child can not be named Mahin regarding the Arabic context as it’s translation in Arabic is worthless and in Islam you are not supposed to name someone with a word that has a bad meaning
Instead someone can be named Mahin regarding the Persian context in which it means “moon- like”

What matters is how you write it in arabic and not in English since it is a arabic and persian origin name not English.

Any more information about the Hindu name? In Sanskrit, mahA, cognate with English much, does mean great, but I do not recognize the maahin form: which language is it from?
