It is from Sanskrit. The root is R which has a cluster of meanings to move, rise, reach, attack, offend, hurt, obtain, excite, erect, or raise, and is a very old word with deep Indoeuropean cognates. The causative root is arpaY and principally means to cause to move, to raise, fix, fasten, place, direct, deliver, offer, present, etc., of which to offer is the meaning most people today will recognize --- the root R itself is not in use in most languages today, but the root arpaY and the nouns from Rta (proper, right, from the root meaning risen high) are used.
arpita (or arpitha in South Indian orthography) thus means offerred or dedicated, often to the divine. It did have meanings like inserted, fixed (including metaphorical uses like the eye was fixed upon something in concentration), cast into, placed in, transferred to (engraved), delivered, or entrusted, but today these meanings seem variatoins of the main meaning: offerred.
