Alafair/Aliphar's origin is still a mystery but the best guess now seems to be that it has an origin in Romany culture.
Are you sure the male name is Alair and not a mistake for Adair? Adair is a Scottish version of Edgar and often considered a "Gaelicized" version of Edgar.
