There is definetly a feminine form of this name. And there was a 9th century saint with the name.
I'm not sure what the exact Russian transliteration is. The Polish forms are Atanazy and Atanazja and the French forms are Athanase and Athanasie.

Afanasiya looks like a very accurate Russian transliteration. To make something ending in "iy" feminine, a lot of the time what they'll do is drop the "y" and add "ya" (looks like a backwards R).

A quick check showed me that using tools like Google and Facebook it is no problem to find real people with that name, so I guess that counts as "legit". The name seems to be quite rare, though.
