My grandmother's name is Darnelle, I have looked it up in this database and a few others but this one is the only one that has turned up anything, and it was the masculine name Darnell. Darnelle may just be an invented feminine form, but I was wondering if anyone else has ever heard of it being used this way. My other question concerns the masculine name Danye. I have found nothing on this name, and I would be very appreciative of any information at all- even guesses would be welcome.

Darnelle = feminine form of Darnel in French, same derivation as Danielle = feminine form of Daniel in French.

Do you have any more information on Danye? Do you know anything about the ethnic or cultural background of the parents of the male named Danye? When and where was he born?
I can see two main possibilities. If it's the name of a fairly young African American, it could be pronounced "DAHN-yay" and be a blend of Daniel and Kanye, as in Kanye West.
If it's the name of an older Caucasian man, I would think it's likely just an odd respelling of Danny.
If it's a name from another culture, neither of the above explanations would hold, of course.
