The town was named for Sedona Arabella Miller Schnebly, wife of the original postmaster (TC or Carl Schnebly) - his first picks of Creek Crossing and Schnebly Station being refused as too long by the postmaster general. TC's brother Ellsworth suggested it as he thought her character would make it a good name. She thought it was too much of an honour for a young woman but the P.G. approved it so there she was. She went by 'Dona' in her day to day life.

Sedona was one of 12 children of Philip and Amanda Miller of Missouri and of Pennsylvania Dutch ancestry. Her mother in interview said she 'just thought up' Sedona because she thought it sounded pretty. There was a trend at the time for names created around the -dona syllable. I've found Caldona, Aldona, Eldona, etc. in genealogy records also.
