Re: What is the meaning of the name "Velva"?
It was the name of a heart surgeon in Cape Town 40-odd years ago; he was of European Jewish descent and the name is said in the family to mean 'wolf"; I think that it is a Yiddish word, but I'm not sure. One of his grandsons has 'Vel' as his middle name, in honour of his grandfather and to avoid "Velva', since "Aqua Velva" is the brand name of, I think, aftershave ... in which case the manufacturers were probably thinking about the way the sound echoes 'velvet' as CKE says rather than the wolf meaning!I imagine that the preacher whose daughter got the name was also thinking 'velvet' rather than 'wolf', but you never know.

Velvel (Yiddish: װעלװעל‎) or Velvl (Yiddish: װעלװל‎) is a Yiddish masculine given name meaning "Little Wolf" (from Yiddish volf, from Germanic wulf).
