I know a little girl with the name Daegan and I am trying to figure out where this name comes from. Any help would be appreciated. What I know about the name:
- pronounced DAY-gən
- feminine
- the bearer is a typical Caucasian-Canadian, most likely her ancestors came from Europe hundreds of years ago. It does not appear to be an ethnic name
I have briefly speculated that this is some modern form of Tegan.
So, is this an actual name? Or am I just getting my hopes up when I realize that this is just a modern, made-up name?
ETA: I found a user-submission of Daegan, but it said that it was a Gaelic name. The bearer does not appear to be Gaelic. Also, her older sister's name is Mackenzie, which is not Gaelic.

Mackenzie is Scottish which is Gaelic, I suppose.
The first thing that came to my mind was that Daegan was a form of the Irish surname Deegan(Dee-gan). Deegan comes from O Duibhginn which comes from Dubhceann, meaning black-haired(literally black headed).
Seems plausible since this family likes surnames as first names.

I'm not at a place where I can look in my Irish or Scottish name dictionaries, so I can't tell you for sure at the moment if Daegan has a Gaelic origin.
But Mackenzie is indeed Gaelic by origin, as is clearly stated in the name dictionary on this site.
Have you asked the parents how they came to name their daughter Daegan? That could certainly give you a clue.

I've now been able to check the dictionaries in my office and can't find anything resembling Daegan except Deegan. One of the alternative spellings for the surname Deegan given in Hanks & Hodges' A Dictionary of Surnames is Deighan, which some people might look at and think was pronounced Daegan. That might be one possible explanation.
But you still should ask the parents where they found it. :)
