My first thought is the Latin Parmula meaning 'little shield' from parma 'shield, buckler'. Any Italian connections?

It looks to me to be a variant spelling of 'Parmelia', which I believe is an elaborated form of Pamelia, which is in turn an elaborated form of Pamela. Follow the 'Pamela' hyperlink for more details. :-)
